SHAH ALAM, Jan 24 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) carried out a ramp demolition operation around Jalan Seksyen 35, Alam Impian, here to address the unauthorised misuse of public parking spaces.
MBSA said the operation was to detect, control and take firm action against business premise owners who had illegally constructed ramps for their business activities.
“This has affected the actual function of public parking bays and disrupted the comfort of other users,” MBSA said in a statement.
The local council said such misuse not only causes congestion and safety issues but also has negative implications on systematic and liveable urban management.
Following the operation conducted on January 22, enforcement action was taken against three business premises for constructing ramps without approval.
“During the same operation, two ramps were demolished and removed, while two compounds were issued to the owners of the premises involved.
“To ensure enforcement was carried out smoothly and effectively, MBSA used heavy machinery in the form of an excavator to dismantle the illegally built ramp structures,” the statement said.
MBSA also stated that the use of public parking spaces without authorisation for business purposes is an offence under the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133).
“We remain committed to ensuring compliance with the law by all parties in order to safeguard public interest and ensure the sustainability of the urban environment,” the local authority said.
At the same time, MBSA adopted a proactive approach by providing special parking bay rental facilities for business purposes to premises that meet the stipulated conditions.
To date, 21 categories of businesses have been identified as eligible to apply for the rental scheme, including car and motorcycle repair shops, vehicle accessory outlets, furniture shops and clinics.
Other eligible premises include vehicle showrooms, supermarkets and grocery stores that require designated space for loading and unloading activities.
MBSA urged traders to always comply with regulations and obtain proper approval before using public facilities for business purposes.
For enquiries or further information regarding applications for special parking bay rentals, the public may contact the Revenue Management Section, MBSA Finance Department at 03-5510 5133 extensions 1477, 1657 or 1658.
