SHAH ALAM, July 29 — Construction of pedestrian walkways linking several Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) stations in Shah Alam is progressing well and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Shah Alam mayor Datuk Zabidah Safar said the project covers four key stations — Dato' Menteri, Section 7, UiTM and Stadium — to improve public access to the rail network.
She said the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) is building five pedestrian walkways, while several other links are being constructed in collaboration with Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS), Management and Science University (MSU), Starhill Century Sdn Bhd and other developers.
"Overall, the pedestrian walkway project is expected to be completed by the end of this year to enable the public to walk to the LRT3 stations more safely and comfortably," she told a press conference after MBSA's full council meeting yesterday.
Zabidah said MBSA has allocated about RM2.7 million for the works under its responsibility, while the remaining construction costs are being borne by the participating companies and agencies.
At Dato' Menteri Station, MBSA is constructing a 550m covered walkway along Persiaran Bandar Raya, Jalan 14/1 and Jalan 14/8, complemented by additional pedestrian links built by Prasarana, Angkasa Sdn Bhd and Starhill Century Sdn Bhd.
At Section 7 Station, MBSA is building a 300m walkway connecting the station to Shah Alam Hospital, while Prasarana is constructing a 270m covered walkway linking the station to Giant hypermarket.
At UiTM Station, MBSA is constructing a 1.13km pedestrian walkway connecting the station to the religious school along Persiaran Selangor, including covered sections near the route.
Meanwhile, works at Stadium Station include the construction of 140m and 200m covered walkways by MBSA, a 330m pedestrian link by PKNS, as well as a connecting walkway to the entrance of MSU.
The need for improved pedestrian access to several LRT3 stations came under the spotlight after social media users highlighted that the routes remained unfriendly to pedestrians and lacked adequate safety following the rail line's opening on June 29.
