PUCHONG, Jan 15 — Flash floods along the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP) near IOI Mall Puchong have ceased following the completion of a flood mitigation project there, said state executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han.

He said the RM6.5 million project has proven effective, with no flash floods recorded since the new drainage system started operating, including during heavy rain last month.

“This project is technically 99 per cent done, with the remaining 1 per cent involving site cleanup and finishing touches which are set to be completed in one or two weeks. However, the entire new drainage system is fully operational.

“Through this project, around 70 per cent of rainwater flow from around Puchong and IOI is channelled to a lake behind IOI Mall Puchong through the new drainage system, while the remaining 30 per cent is channelled via existing drains in front of the mall to Sungai Klang,” he said during a site visit to the flood mitigation project near IOI Business Park here today.

Ng, who is also Kinrara assemblyman, said improvements to the drainage system have resolved frequent water overflow due to continuous heavy downpours amid climate change.

“Among the main scopes of the project are site and land cleanups, the construction of a box culvert under the expressway, roadworks, sewerage systems, underground pipe tunnelling works, and building a sump pit.

“The project was supposed to have been completed on February 27, 2024, but it experienced some delays due to several technical and operational challenges,” he said.

Ng added that the project is set to benefit nearly 500,000 LDP and Puchong road users while improving traffic flow and safety.

“We have successfully resolved the flash flood problem in the area, and I’m confident future risks can be lowered even during heavy rain,” he said.

Ng also said the RM6.5 million project was sponsored thanks to cooperation from various parties.

It involves RM4 million from the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), RM1.5 million from highway concessionaire Litrak, and RM1 million from IOI Corporation Bhd, to ensure public safety and well-being.
