Glamping With Pride: Go ahead with event and face the music — MB

SHAH ALAM, Jan 13 — Authorities will take legal action if Glamping With Pride organisers proceed with the event this weekend, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said local authorities and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) are aware of the event, which is linked to a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) group.

“There is no issue if it is an ordinary family glamping activity, but the Sultan of Selangor’s (Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj) decree clearly refers to deviant activities.

“All parties have rejected the programme. It is unlikely to be held, but if the organisers continue to challenge the authorities, action will be taken. We have not received an update, but even if an application is submitted, it will be rejected.

“The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) will continue to monitor the situation,” he told reporters after handing over appointment letters to the new National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) panel of advisers for the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur chapter here today.

Meanwhile, state executive councillor for Islam and innovation Dr Fahmi Ngah said police have initiated investigations into the event while Jais has deployed officers to carry out monitoring.

“There has been no official application from the organisers, which may indicate an attempt to test the state’s authority. Jais has issued a directive to local authorities not to grant any permits.

“Local residents are also urged to cooperate by providing information or lodging reports. If gatherings are held without a permit, police reports can be made immediately. Even if a permit exists but inappropriate activities take place, enforcement action can still be taken,” Fahmi said.

Previously, the media reported that Glamping With Pride organisers intend to proceed with the event in Hulu Langat on Saturday despite objections.

The LGBT group, known as Jejaka, claimed the two-day programme is a community-based retreat focusing on well-being, peer support, and health awareness.

Jejaka has since called off the event, having announced the cancellation via a statement in an Instagram post.

“The venue owner has cancelled the booking on safety grounds, and we have received credible and explicit threats, including death threats and references to violent acts, directed at our organisation through social media. These threats have been documented, and a police report will be lodged,” it said in the statement.

In a joint statement yesterday, Mais chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin and Selangor Mufti Datuk Anhar Opir said Sultan Sharafuddin strongly opposes and objects to deviant activity in the state, and decreed that firm action be taken against the event.
