Sultan of Selangor opposes LGBT activities, orders firm action

SHAH ALAM, Jan 12 — The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has instructed that firm action is to be taken against the 'Glamping With Pride' programme, scheduled to be held in Hulu Langat on Saturday (January 17) and Sunday (January 18).

The Selangor Islamic Religious Council's (Mais) chairman Dato' Setia Salehuddin Saidin and the Mufti of Selangor Dato' Setia Anhar Opir said the Ruler expressed strong opposition and firm objection to any deviant lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activities organised within the state.

“His Royal Highness decreed that no form of festival, parade, celebration, promotion, or the establishment of associations or organisations related to LGBT be permitted in any district in Selangor.

“His Royal Highness stressed that although such acts may involve individual sins between a person and Allah that transgress the bounds of human nature, these actions can invite the wrath and curse of Allah SWT upon the state,” they said in a joint statement.

This comes after Sultan Sharafuddin granted a royal audience to Salehuddin and Anhar at Istana Bukit Kayangan earlier today.

Per the sovereign's decree, Mais and the Mufti also voiced their objection and opposition to any form of organisation of celebrations or promotion of the deviant LGBT lifestyle in any district in Selangor.

Salehuddin and Anhar stressed that Islam has prohibited deviant LGBT practices, which bear similarities to the act of liwat (sodomy) committed by the people of the Prophet Lut (AS), and which incurred divine wrath and punishment was inflicted upon them because of these actions.

They emphasised that the act of liwat committed by Lut's people, also practised by LGBT groups, falls under the category of major sins and is more despicable than the offence of adultery.

“Muslims, especially youths, should not be influenced by Western lifestyles that practise such deviant acts under the pretext of human rights and freedoms.

“Not all freedoms under human rights can be accepted or adopted as practices within the Muslim community if they clearly contradict the teachings of Islam,” Mais and the Mufti said.

Following Sultan Sharafuddin’s firm stance on this issue, Salehuddin and Anhar urged the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the local authorities to prevent and refrain from issuing any permits for the organisation of the programme, as well as similar programmes, in Selangor.

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), the local authorities, and PDRM were also urged to carry out close monitoring and take firm action in accordance with the law to ensure that such activities are not organised, as decreed by His Royal Highness.

“Mais and the Selangor Mufti call for the commitment of all parties to preserve the sanctity of Islam to ensure that Selangor remains harmonious and free from any deviant practices that are contrary to Islamic teachings,” they said.
