SHAH ALAM, Jan 9 — The Selangor Kitar Semula (SELKitar) was expanded to 47 housing areas in Hulu Selangor on Monday to increase the sorting of recyclable waste at the source.

The Hulu Selangor Municipal Council (MPHS), in a statement posted to Facebook, said the state government initiative aims to avoid the contamination of recyclables and prevent them from ending up at landfills.

“The door-to-door collection programme accepts recyclables like plastic, paper, cardboard, drink cartons and metal,” it said in the post.

MPHS said SELKitar not only helps reduce solid waste sent to landfills, but supports the environmental sustainability agenda at the community level.

It urged residents in the areas involved to cooperate and make it a habit to recycle their waste, towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment.

“Residents are encouraged to sort their waste into (the prescribed) categories before handing it over to collectors, in an effort to practise a sustainable lifestyle,” MPHS said.

SELKitar, which was launched in April last year, is the state government’s long-term circular economy initiative towards more effective waste management.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said 77,022kg of recyclables was collected up to October 31, 2025, through SELKitar.

He said the amount is expected to go up in line with operational optimisation and the expansion of service coverage to over 400 residential areas statewide.
