SHAH ALAM, Oct 21 — Selangor residents are increasingly getting into the habit of segregating domestic waste and recycling thanks to SELKitar, which covers 380,000 households statewide, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He added that this reflects the people’s readiness to change how they manage their domestic waste and incorporate recycling into daily routines.

Amirudin said that under SELKitar, which started as a pilot project in Subang Jaya and Sepang, more than 6,300 tonnes of recyclables including plastic bottles, milk cartons, and beverage cans have been collected and processed.

“I see a clear willingness among the people of Selangor to embrace recycling, starting right at home.

“Separating waste at home is no longer viewed as a burden, but as a new habit that is becoming ingrained in culture,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Amirudin added that normalising this practice helps reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, which preserves land and helps mitigate pollution.

According to him, the initiative is a key objective of the First and Second Selangor Plans (RS-1 and RS-2), aimed at strengthening waste management and environmental sustainability.

“I hope more Selangor residents will join SELKitar, especially those living in apartments and condominiums, who will be included in the next phase of the programme,” Amirudin said.
