SHAH ALAM, Oct 23 — KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) plans to expand the Selangor Kitar Semula (SELKitar) recycling initiative to strata housing next year.
KDEBWM managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said the suggestion was made following encouraging response from residents, including expressions of interest from strata housing residents in the programme.
He added that 531 tonnes of recyclables have been collected since SELKitar was launched in May last year.
“This year up to July, we have collected over 50,000kg of recyclable waste … from nearly 400,000 homes, and for now, eight local councils have joined this programme while four more have been running (similar initiatives) from the start,” he told Media Selangor, adding that KDEBWM aims for all local councils to join the programme.
Ramli said he hopes the Selangor government allocates more funds so SELKitar may serve more areas in the state with more recyclables-specific lorries.
“My suggestion, if we want to continue the programme, is to ask the state government to give us the same allocation, or more for a larger (service) area, from next year.
“We have dedicated 23 lorries specifically for SELKitar in eight municipalities, and there must be more lorries to expand the service to other areas,” he explained.
SELKitar now covers 50 neighbourhoods. It was first launched in areas under the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and Sepang Municipal Council’s (MPSepang) jurisdiction.
Under the programme, recyclables must be:
Sorted into categories (plastic, paper, aluminium, cardboard, drink cartons)
Clean and dry
Contained in boxes or plastic bags
Placed outside homes according to the collection schedule
