SHAH ALAM, Jan 9 — Repairs are about done on four schools in Sijangkang that were damaged in a severe October storm, with three completed ahead of schedule, said Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) director Shukri Ishak.

He said the three schools whose repairs have been completed are SMK Sijangkang Jaya, SK Sijangkang Jaya, and SK Kampung Medan.

“(Repairs to) SK Sijangkang Jaya, which suffered damage to several blocks including its canteen, are almost done, and JKR is liaising with the school on cleanup works before the school session starts.

“Same goes to SK Kampung Medan; roof replacement and electrical wiring works are done, and it is in the cleanup stage. For SMK Sijangkang Jaya, the progress of repairs is at 90 per cent, and it is expected to be done in three days,” Shukri told Media Selangor.

However, he said fixes at SK Jalan Tanjung, with progress at 85 per cent, could be completed slightly later, though still on time.

“Repairs at SK Jalan Tanjung involve roof replacement, electrical wiring, and (fixes to) the computer lab that suffered severe damage. It is expected to be done in two more weeks,” he added.

He explained that SK Jalan Tanjung will only be cleared for access in early February, and has advised the school to temporarily run home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) for students’ safety.

He said JKR is ensuring that repairs are done according to the fixed timeline and specifications.

“The timeline to repair these four schools was fixed for mid-February by the contractor, but they have been completed earlier.

“JKR also closely monitored (the works) so the quality of built structures function as hoped,” Shukri added.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari visited SMK Sijangkang Jaya to survey damage from the storm.

In a briefing for Amirudin, Shukri said SK Sijangkang Jaya and SK Kampung Medan suffered critical damage, while SK Jalan Tanjung and SMK Sijangkang Jaya suffered moderately critical damage.

The Selangor JKR director also said repair cost estimates for SK Sijangkang Jaya was RM4.5 million, followed by SK Kampung Medan (RM3.9 million), SMK Sijangkang Jaya (RM1.2 million), and SK Jalan Tanjung (RM550,000), for a total of RM10.15 million.

Selangor’s schooling session begins January 12.
