SHAH ALAM, Jan 6 — A total of 14 per cent of policymakers in the state comprise women serving across various levels and departments.
State executive councillor for women’s empowerment and social welfare Anfaal Saari said the percentage is expected to continue increasing, noting that many key positions in the state administration, like district officers, department heads, and local authorities, are currently held by women.
“There are those in Gombak, Kuala Langat, Hulu Selangor, and the Sepang Municipal Council. This number will continue to grow.
"This also demonstrates women’s capabilities in policymaking and implementation. This helps the administration from a more inclusive perspective.
"However, in the political sphere, the aspiration of achieving 30 per cent women’s representation has yet to be realised,” she said during a media conference after officiating the closing of the Selangor Women’s Assembly (Siwanis) today.
In 2018, then-state executive councillor for public health Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud set a quota of 30 per cent women’s participation to achieve gender equality.
She said that women’s participation in decision-making can improve their standing across the economic, social, and political sectors, while also challenging stereotypes that hinder women’s ability to play leading, positive roles in everyday life.
