Sultan urges ‘zero flood’ target, end to politicking in New Year message

SHAH ALAM, Dec 29 — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has urged a target of “zero floods” for the state next year, and told lawmakers to put an end to politicking and focus on solving the people’s problems.

In a firm call for action, His Royal Highness said the long-standing flood issue must be resolved decisively, and that the people should never pay the price for policy failures.

“I want to see the flood problem addressed thoroughly, with a clear ‘zero flood’ target,” the Ruler said in his New Year message posted on the Selangor Royal Office’s Facebook page today.

“Seek the best expertise, be it from within the country or abroad. Make full use of knowledge, technology and experience, and stop hiding behind excuses, as the people’s suffering must never be the price paid for failures in planning.”

While acknowledging that natural disasters such as storms, heavy rain and other acts of God cannot be prevented, Sultan Sharafuddin expressed confidence that flooding can be mitigated with proper systems, long-term planning, and disciplined implementation.

His Royal Highness also urged those entrusted with power and responsibility, especially lawmakers in Selangor, to stop focusing excessively on political discourse and instead channel their energy towards real, people-centric development, especially with the general election approaching.

“Enough talk about politics. Focus on doing the work needed to solve the people’s problems.

“All energy and attention should be directed towards meaningful development that safeguards public welfare and ensures a fair and effective system for the people,” the Sultan said.

His Royal Highness added that all plans and actions must ultimately be guided by the single goal of ensuring prosperity for the people and the stability of Selangor.

Sultan Sharafuddin and Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin also extended their New Year greetings to Selangor residents of all races, religions and backgrounds, and expressed hope that the year ahead would bring hope, peace and lasting prosperity.

“Let the new year be a point of resolve (for us) to become better individuals, more ethical and more beneficial to our families, society and the state,” the Ruler said.
