SHAH ALAM, Dec 9 — Women’s representation in Selangor's administration should be increased with a target of 50 per cent of positions filled, particularly at all levels of policy formulation and decision-making.
The Selangor State Legislative Assembly Speaker Lau Weng San described the proposal as an essential step toward strengthening Selangor’s commitment to elevating women’s leadership.
“It is time for the government to consider increasing women’s representation to 50 per cent in all appointed positions and policy-making platforms,” he said during a media conference after the launch of the Selangor Women’s Assembly (Siwanis) 2025-2026 at the State Secretariat Building today.
Lau added that the Siwanis programme's implementation over the past two years has demonstrated the vast potential of women in leadership, yet stronger policies are needed to broaden opportunities for their participation.
“Women in Selangor have long been ready. What is needed now is a policy decision at the state government level to ensure this 50 per cent target can be realised,” he said.
As such, the first step towards this change could be appointing local authority councillors.
“We can begin with the first step through the councillors’ appointments. If this can be implemented for the 2026 councillor appointments, it will positively impact women in Selangor and the wider community.
"If the state executive councillor for women’s empowerment Anfaal Saari requires support, I am in favour of this proposal. I believe political parties should consider this proposal so that it can help their women’s wings expand their influence, as well as the influence of women in society,” Lau said.
