SHAH ALAM, Dec 5 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has expressed full support towards the implementation of the Selangor sustainability fee, which will take effect in January 2026.
The matter was conveyed during the MBPJ Special Meeting No. 1/2025 today, chaired by Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon, together with MBPJ councillors and senior management at Dewan Bunga Tanjung in the MBPJ Headquarters.
“The introduction of the fee was approved by the Selangor State Executive Council on September 3, 2025, as part of the state government’s effort to strengthen the tourism ecosystem and long-term sustainability agenda,” it said in a Facebook post.
MBPJ added that the sustainability fee is designed to support several key objectives, such as increasing state revenue, enhancing the state’s sustainable tourism image, funding tourism-related infrastructure development, supporting environmental conservation initiatives, and ensuring the tourism sector’s long-term resilience.
“We are committed to ensuring the smooth implementation of the policy at the local government level and to guaranteeing that the benefits are felt by Petaling Jaya residents as well as visitors,” it said.
The council also reaffirmed that its guiding slogan, “Petaling Jaya, the Happiest and Most Sustainable City,” continues to shape its efforts to strengthen well-being and urban sustainability.
On November 21, state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said the state government will introduce a sustainability fee for tourists starting January 1, 2026, in line with similar initiatives implemented in other states.
He said the fee, which will apply to all visitors to the state, is intended to support environmental sustainability and preserve the state’s natural and cultural assets.
Hotels will act as intermediaries for collection, and the local authorities will manage the fund’s coordination, collection, and administration.
The initial discussion structure for the fees is RM7 per night for five-star hotels, RM5 for three-star accommodations, RM3 for other hotels, and RM2 for homestays and similar lodgings.
