SHAH ALAM, Nov 25 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has mandated that all premises under its administration implement a ban on single-use plastics, as part of efforts to strengthen the city’s sustainability agenda.
Shah Alam Mayor Dato’ Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said the decision was approved during an MBSA management meeting in line with the state government’s directive on implementing the plastic-free guidelines.
“This implementation covers all MBSA-owned premises, including Wisma MBSA, branch offices, halls, libraries, and other related facilities.
“Enforcement follows instructions issued in the state secretary’s circular letter (SUK) No 1 of 2025, which requires all state government buildings or premises to adhere to the plastic-free guidelines,” he said while chairing the 11th MBSA Council Meeting of 2025 at Wisma MBSA yesterday.
He added that the ban also applies to all MBSA-organised programmes and activities, including official events, departmental meetings, and community activities.

On March 26, the Selangor Government issued SUK Circular Letter (SPBT) No 1 of 2025, detailing the full implementation of the Single-Use Plastic Avoidance Programme across all government buildings and administrative premises.
The circular sets out plastic-free guidelines, including prohibitions on plastic bottles, food wrappers, and disposable plastic containers.
The move supports the state government’s efforts to strengthen sustainability policies and gradually reduce plastic pollution.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) has also reinforced Malaysia’s Roadmap Towards Zero Single-Use Plastics 2018–2030 as a key national strategy to systematically curb plastic pollution.
Datuk Dr Ching Thoo Kim, secretary-general of NRES, previously explained that the roadmap focuses on changing public behaviour from excessive plastic use to recycling and reusing practices.
