SHAH ALAM, Nov 20 — After 40 years of standing tall as one of Shah Alam's most famous landmarks, Plaza Perangsang is set to undergo a transformation to become a modernised business and recreation hub.

The Selangor State Development Corporation’s (PKNS) group chief executive officer (CEO) Dato’ Mahmud Abbas said the upgrade is part of PKNS's strategic mission under its SA Sentral project.

He added that the building's transformation would help to strengthen Shah Alam's standing as a modern, dynamic and competitive city.

Built in 1988, the 27-storey Plaza Perangsang has long stood as an administrative and commercial landmark in Shah Alam. Under the PKNS asset optimisation plan, the building is now being repositioned from a conventional office tower into an integrated business and leisure destination.

“The upgrading works include incorporating various components such as a hotel, modern office spaces, flexible co-working areas, more than 600 multi-level parking bays, as well as a range of cafés and restaurants.

“This initiative also reflects PKNS’s commitment to strengthening Selangor’s hospitality sector in line with next year’s Malaysia Games (Sukma 2006),” he said.

He said this at a press conference during the presentation on the 'Special Preview of Grand Mercure Shah Alam by PKNS' held at Galeria SA Sentral, Section 14 here yesterday.

PKNS group CEO Dato’ Mahmud Abbas says Plaza Perangsang will not just have a new hotel within its premises, but also office spaces, eateries, and 600 multi-level parking bays. He is seen here in Shah Alam on November 19, 2025.

Meanwhile, SA Sentral CEO (Designate) Datuk Mohd Najib Ibrahim said the Grand Mercure Shah Alam Hotel, which carries a ‘modern heritage’ concept, is expected to officially open in the second quarter of 2026 and will occupy Levels 18 to 26B of Plaza Perangsang.

According to him, the repositioning of Plaza Perangsang as the Grand Mercure Shah Alam Hotel stems from a strategic collaboration between DPMS Hospitality Sdn Bhd and Accor, one of the world’s leading hospitality groups.

“The presence of Grand Mercure as the main component of Plaza Perangsang’s transformation brings added value through offerings such as modern rooms, restaurants, event spaces and premium international-standard facilities.

“This hotel not only elevates the profile of Plaza Perangsang but also strengthens Shah Alam’s economic ecosystem as a preferred destination for tourists, businesses and conferences,” he said.

The hotel will offer 156 premium guest rooms along with a wide range of international-standard amenities, including restaurants, a spa, swimming pool, fitness centre, meeting rooms, a banquet hall and dedicated children’s facilities.
