Exco calls for urgent probe into ECRL structure collapse on MRR2

SHAH ALAM, Nov 18 — The Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) has ordered the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) operator to perform urgent cleanups and improve construction site safety after a structure collapsed on a moving car along the MRR2 today.

State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said the Selangor government views the incident seriously, and that though construction won’t be halted, the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) has been ordered to launch an investigation to ensure contractors adhere to safety procedures.

“The contractor must give an explanation and submit suggested improvements. If there indeed was negligence, strict action will be taken,” he said.

In the incident, a woman narrowly escaped injury when her car was crushed by steel parts under an ECRL construction site along the MRR2 in Batu Caves near the Gombak toll plaza.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the agency received an emergency call about the incident around 1.47pm.

Seven Selayang Fire and Rescue Station personnel, a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit were deployed to the scene, but the victim had been rescued by members of the public before firefighters arrived.

“The operations commander reported that a structure from the ECRL construction had collapsed onto a Suzuki Swift.

“However, the victim had already been rescued by members of the public,” he said in a statement today.

Mukhlis added that firefighters are monitoring the scene to ensure safety, while the victim was reportedly not injured.
