KLANG, Nov 4 — The state government is targeting an increase in international tourist arrivals to 35 per cent next year as part of efforts to strengthen the tourism sector, which remains one of the key contributors to Selangor's economic growth.
State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said the tourism industry is among the sectors that provide immediate economic impact, and the rise in international visitors is expected to further boost the sector’s performance.
“Many tourists come to Selangor for various segments, including cultural, culinary, shopping, medical tourism, and religious purposes.
“So far, as of the second quarter, more than four million tourists have been recorded, with 72 per cent being domestic travellers. For next year, we are targeting 65 per cent domestic tourists and 35 per cent international,” he said.
Ng was speaking to the press after officiating the graduation ceremony for Selangor Local Community Hosts from the Sabak Bernam and Kuala Selangor districts today.
He is optimistic that the target of eight million tourists for this year can be achieved through the various initiatives undertaken by Tourism Selangor together with industry players.
For this year’s edition, 49 individuals were appointed as community tourism hosts and received certificates of appreciation after completing a programme aimed at strengthening community-based tourism.
Commenting on the programme, Ng said that community hosts are trained individuals who receive guidance on assisting tourism activities within their respective communities.
“They act as tour guides, highlighting the uniqueness or special attractions of their local areas while providing explanations to visitors.
“These community hosts currently serve on a part-time basis, but we hope they will eventually take it up full-time so that Selangor’s tourism industry can continue to flourish,” he said.
During the event, Sky Mirror, Splash Mania, and the Selangor-Japan Friendship Garden under the Shah Alam City Council were among the recipients of the Tourism Selangor Iconic Product Award 2024.
