Selangor celebrates innovation in public service, community solutions

SHAH ALAM, Oct 30 — The state government continues to strengthen its innovation ecosystem through the Selangor Innovation Awards (AINS) and the Selangor Public Service Innovation Ceremony (MPIPANS), which recognise creative ideas and solutions that enhance public service delivery and benefit the community.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari in his speech at the event said innovation has become a key driver in Selangor’s transformation into a smart, livable and prosperous state.

“Innovation is no longer an option but a necessity, for us to adapt and strengthen the administration and the people’s well-being,” he said at the State Secretariat Building here today.

Amirudin said the state government’s annual innovation competitions have drawn strong participation across all levels, from civil servants and private companies to schools, universities and individuals.

“This year alone, 364 entries were received from across the state, a sign that innovation is becoming a shared culture,” he said. “Innovation starts with the culture of solving problems — how we adapt, how we interact, and how we create solutions to remain resilient,” he told reporters after the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Selangor State Secretary Datuk Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin said AINS is a platform for Selangor residents to showcase their creativity and contribute to the state’s innovation culture.

He said the competition was jointly organised by the State Secretary’s Office and the state’s 12 local authorities, merging the Selangor Public Sector Innovation Award (introduced in 2010) and the My Innovation Challenge (introduced in 2015).

“Innovation is not just a choice but a foundation for government transformation. It ensures every step we take remains relevant in facing future challenges,” Fadzli said in his speech.

He said that from next year, AINS will be strengthened through collaboration with the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation (MyIPO) to ensure intellectual property protection for innovation products developed by state agencies.

With over 360 entries across eight main categories, he said there has been a steady increase in participation. compared with 306 entries in 2024 and just 220 in 2023.

The event also recognised winners of MPIPANS 2025, a biennial competition encouraging public servants to work collaboratively to develop or improve innovative products that enhance administrative efficiency and public service delivery.

Among this year’s winners were Team EX7 from the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) in the Social Innovation (Creation) category with their project IRIS; Team Green Troopers from the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) who topped the Social Innovation (Improvement) category with their project “Establishing the PJ Eco Recycling Plaza as a Centre of Excellence for Environmental Sustainability through Community Partnership”; and Team C-Force from the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), which won the Service Delivery Innovation (Creation) category for their Smart C-Box solution to address issues related to power supply disruptions.

Fadzli added that the state’s innovation drive would not end in just contests, but move towards commercialisation and the replication of successful innovations.

“Innovation must go beyond creation. It should continue into commercialisation and replication so the benefits can be shared across agencies and communities,” said the Selangor state secretary.
