SHAH ALAM, Oct 17 — Reserved parking bays in Petaling Jaya will soon operate round the clock, reportsThe Star.
Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said 1,000 reserved parking bays across the city would be converted into 24-hour spaces, with another 54 blue-line bays to be repainted red.
“We will use only one colour for the reserved bays, red. The bays marked with blue lines, which currently indicate 24-hour parking, will be phased out.
“In total, there will be 1,054 parking bays designated for 24-hour use. These bays will be rented out at RM400 per month,” he said.
The city’s blue line parking bays were previously meant as rental spaces for businesses and were used for 24-hour parking, while the red lines were for seasonal reserved parking allowed only during business hours.
Mohamad Zahri said the move, part of MBPJ’s Budget 2026 measures, is expected to boost the council’s revenue next year.
MBPJ projects a decline in parking fine revenue by RM1.7 million to RM15.95 million in 2026, compared with RM17.66 million this year.
“With the new parking concessionaire deal by the state, there will be more enforcement. We expect the public to comply with the rules and pay accordingly.”
However, Mohamad Zahri said income from licences, registration and permits is expected to rise by RM1.47 million to RM32.6 million.
The council has tabled a deficit budget for 2026, estimating a shortfall of RM25.6 million while maintaining the current assessment tax rate.
MBPJ expects RM496.1 million in revenue and RM521.7 million in expenditure, of which RM110.5 million is allocated for development.
Mohamad Zahri described the deficit as a strategic measure to accommodate rising costs while maintaining service delivery.
Development spending will account for 21 per cent of total expenditure, focusing on facilities for the Malaysia Games 2026, hillslope and drainage maintenance, and upgrading lift and air-conditioning systems in council-owned assets.
As of September, MBPJ employs 1,082 permanent staff, 769 contract staff, 62 contract-for-service staff and 56 part-time daily workers.
