SHAH ALAM, Oct 15 — State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim is the latest politician to receive a letter containing falsified, AI-generated images, which he described as a malicious attempt to damage his reputation and threaten his family.
The Pakatan Harapan lawmaker firmly denied the authenticity of the images, adding that he would file reports with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Ng said he received the letter via post yesterday, which included a fake screenshot, claiming to have video footage of him. He believes the images are part of an extortion attempt.
The sender demanded he make contact via email to “avoid disturbing his family and professional reputation”.
“I found that it was an AI-generated screenshot that placed my profile photo alongside an unknown woman, both depicted without clothing in what appeared to be a hotel room.
“I would like to clearly state that this is a fake screenshot, and the individual in the image is not me. I will be filing reports with both MCMC and the police,” he said in a statement today.
Ng warned that such acts of defamation and blackmail pose serious threats not only to personal safety but also to the integrity of public officials.
“This extortion attempt is not only a danger to my family and me, but an effort to tarnish my reputation,” he said, adding that technological advances in AI have made digital impersonation a growing concern.
He also urged the public to remain vigilant against online fraud and extortion schemes, particularly those using AI-generated content to deceive victims.
Last month, it was reported that at least 10 MPs had been blackmailed with the release of deepfake sex videos using their likenesses.
