KDEBWM takes full responsibility for crash, introduces four corrective measures

SHAH ALAM, Oct 12 — KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) has taken full responsibility for the incident involving a garbage truck that crashed into a concrete barrier at the Puchong Selatan toll plaza along the Damansara–Puchong Expressway (LDP) yesterday.

Its managing director, Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir, said the garbage truck involved was operated by a company previously appointed by KDEBWM to carry out solid waste collection in Kajang. However, the company’s service contract had expired in June.

“The transfer of ownership has not yet been completed by the company, including the vehicle permit, which is still being processed. Therefore, the truck is still officially registered under KDEBWM.

“Throughout the duration of the company’s contract, KDEBWM conducted full monitoring and took strict action against all appointed contractors and compactor truck operators who breached the terms and conditions of their agreements,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Ramli said the company has introduced four immediate corrective measures and is fully cooperating with the authorities in the ongoing investigation.

He said the measures include reviewing all internal procedures related to vehicle ownership transfer and working with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) to expedite the process.

“For contractors whose vehicle lease payments to KDEBWM have ended, they are required to transfer ownership immediately in accordance with the terms and conditions of the agreement.

“We will also ensure all appointed contractors comply with JPJ and Apad regulations, particularly that drivers possess valid vocational driving licences (GDL) to operate compactor or arm roll trucks.

“KDEBWM will further ensure that all contractors adhere to road regulations, and any traffic summonses must be settled promptly to prevent disruptions to daily operations."

Ramli said KDEBWM continues to provide comprehensive training and guidance to its drivers, in collaboration with the authorities, to ensure they are competent in handling garbage trucks during daily operations.

A 30-second video of the incident has gone viral, showing a garbage truck swerving from the far-left lane toward the right before crashing into a concrete divider at the toll plaza.

Following the incident, police are tracking down the driver, believed to be an Indonesian national, who fled the scene immediately after the crash.
