KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — Sixty per cent of rivers in Selangor have seen an improvement in water quality from Class 4 to Class 3 thanks to the state government’s RM3 million annual allocation, said Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) chief assistant director Haslina Amer.

She said Class 4 denotes water of bad quality that can only be used for irrigation, while Class 3 water can be used for recreation and such.

“To date there are 16 rivers involved, and the restoration process began in subsidiaries including Sungai Gong, Sungai Sembah, Sungai Damansara, Sungai Langat, and Sungai Semenyih. The techniques used include bioremediation,” she said during a sharing session at the Selangor Investment and Industrial Park Expo (SPARK) here today.

SPARK is held under the auspices of the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS), which runs at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre until Saturday.

The session was on the Zero-Discharge Policy (ZDP), which aims to sustainably manage water resources in Selangor.

She said Sungai Gong in Rawang is among the sites where Luas launched a successful pioneering bioremediation project in 2021. It spans 5.6km of the river and involved a cost of RM2.4 million.

“Till now, there are no more plant operation disruptions due to pollution in that river,” Haslina said.
