SHAH ALAM, Oct 1 — The state government's effort to provide rest areas equipped with facilities helps p-hailing drivers feel safer.

Mohd Aizad Fahmi Rizal, 20, said that compared with stopping by the roadside, the 'TEDUH' (Tempat Elok untuk Hentian) project can reduce the rate of road accidents.

“I have been a rider for six months; previously, I worked with my uncle at a night market. Certainly, this initiative makes me feel much safer taking shelter, especially when it rains.

“This is because sometimes when we have to stop in the rain, other vehicles, especially speeding lorries, do not think of others’ safety,” he told Media Selangor.

Meanwhile, R. Vishnu, 31, said the state government’s initiative was very good as such rest areas were very limited, forcing drivers to seek shelter wherever they felt safe.

“The availability of safe rest areas is scarce, and we sometimes have to take shelter by the roadside or at bus stops if it rains or when we are tired.

“Sometimes we have to deliver orders quite far and work up to 12 hours, so having rest areas like these allows us to rest and feel safe,” he said.

For Haikal Alias, 29, he hopes the initiative can be expedited, especially now when the weather is often rainy or extremely hot.

“As someone who spends the whole day on the road, it is definitely tiring and we need a safe place to take shelter.

“Sometimes we have to stay sheltered for up to 30 minutes in unsafe or risky areas, but with such spaces, we would not be as worried,” he said.

Recently, state executive councillor for Islamic affairs and innovation Dr Muhammad Fahmi Ngah announced that the state government would launch Project TEDUH as a safe rest area for p-hailing drivers.

The initiative is being implemented in five local authorities in its first phase as part of efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.

He said the facilities provided will include mobile phone charging stations, benches for resting and sleeping, fans, water supply, electricity, and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to ensure safety.
