SHAH ALAM, Sept 24 — Chinese automaker Chery’s investment in Selangor, projected to surpass RM2 billion over the next five years, is set to create high-skilled job opportunities while also providing technical and vocational training for local graduates.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the move would also generate economic spillovers for small and medium enterprises in the automotive supply chain, while strengthening the state’s global competitiveness.

“Selangor will continue to forge strategic partnerships with Chery and other investors to create better opportunities and prosperity for the people of this state,” he said during a visit to Wuhu, China yesterday.

According to Amirudin, Chery’s investment in Selangor includes the development of the Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park within a 323.75-hectare ecosystem at the Beringin High-Tech Auto Valley (HTA) in Hulu Selangor.

The development aligns with the phased vision of Beringin HTA Valley to build an integrated township capable of attracting talent, investment, and innovation to the area.

It includes the establishment of production, automation, and innovation facilities for petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and battery electric vehicles (BEV), with an initial capacity of 100,000 units annually, expandable to 300,000 units.

During his visit to Chery's plant with the Selangor delegation, Amirudin also expressed admiration for the automaker's use of robotics in its vehicle production process.

“I am impressed by the scale and level of automation here, as almost all welding and assembly work is performed by robots. Only fine detailing and quality inspection still require human technical expertise,” he said.

He added that Chery has also developed AiMOGA, a humanoid robot deployed in several showrooms, capable of understanding human speech and responding in 11 languages.

“I was informed that Chery has already delivered around 220 AiMOGA humanoid robots worldwide, demonstrating the readiness of this technology for the real market,” he said.

Amirudin is currently in China on a trade and investment mission from September 23-30 to explore potential collaborations with several industry players.

He is accompanied by state executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han, Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) chief executive officer Dato’ Saipolyazan M. Yusop, and MBI Foundation chief Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor.

Also part of the delegation are Invest Selangor Bhd chief executive officer Dato’ Hasan Azhari Idris and Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) chief executive officer Yong Kai Ping.
