SHAH ALAM, Jan 21 — The Selangor Smart City initiative is a long-term strategic investment that will determine the state’s ability to take advantage of technology to improve the people’s quality of life and economic competitiveness in the future, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the plan focuses on comprehensive technology use to improve public service delivery efficiency so it is faster, more transparent, and more effective, in line with the people’s current needs.
“The cooperation between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Selangor government has been strengthened with the exchange of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to expand internet access that is more stable and of quality in the state.
“The state government is also grateful to the Communications Ministry for channelling an allocation of RM450 million to support this initiative, driving the digitalisation agenda and smart city development for the people’s benefit.
“God willing, the development of Selangor Smart City will continue strengthening the state’s position as a leader of digital innovation,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.

At yesterday’s event, the MOU exchange was witnessed by Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj during a ceremony at Concorde Hotel here.
Also present were Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and state and federal leaders.
According to Fahmi, the MOU emphasises three main fields under smart city development — smart interconnectivity infrastructure, improved public safety and traffic management, and smart flood management systems.
He added that smart interconnectivity infrastructure is the core of a smart city; an effort that includes the expansion of the fibre optic network, the provision of public Wi-Fi, and continuous support for the National Digital Network (JENDELA) to ensure wider, more stable internet access.
As of December 31, Selangor achieved 96.9 per cent 5G coverage for its 7.4 million residents, the highest coverage rate in Malaysia.
