JIAXING, Sept 22 — Chinese semiconductor giant StarPower Semiconductor Ltd is evaluating Malaysia, including Selangor, as the site for its first-phase RM200 million investment to establish advanced power module production facilities.
The Jiaxing-based company conveyed its interest during a meeting with Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, who began his nine-day working visit to China today.
StarPower, a global leader in power module technology, specialises in designing and manufacturing insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT), silicon carbide (SiC) Mosfets, intelligent power modules, and fast recovery diodes.
Its proposed investment will focus on IGBT and SiC Mosfet production, key components for semiconductors and renewable energy applications.
Amirudin said Selangor offers distinct advantages as an investment destination, from proximity to major ports and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to streamlined approvals through the Speed Selangor policy, to be launched next month.
“Selangor is also prioritising talent development through the Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia (Asem), which runs training programmes in circuit design and offers international exposure through the Global Semiconductor Exchange Programme in Shenzhen,” he said.
The state’s mature industrial ecosystem, skilled workforce, and world-class infrastructure, he added, position Selangor as the ideal location for global semiconductor firms such as StarPower to establish operations in Malaysia.
Amirudin is leading a delegation that includes state executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han, Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, chief executive officer Dato’ Saipolyazan M Yusop, Yayasan MBI chief Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor, Invest Selangor Bhd chief executive officer Dato’ Hasan Azhari Haji Idris, and Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) chief executive officer Yong Kai Ping.
The delegation will also visit Anhui, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guangdong before returning to Malaysia on September 30.
