Luas acts fast to prevent river pollution after lorry crash

SHAH ALAM, Sept 18 — A crash between two lorries at Km430.5 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) southbound this morning resulted in the risk of pollution to one of Selangor’s main water sources.

The 4.50am incident involved a lorry carrying oil in intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) and another lorry carrying rice.

The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) in a statement said the crash caused 10 of the 22 IBCs to leak oil into the highway drain, which flowed into a Sungai Guntong subsidiary.

“This spill could reach Sungai Selangor and affect operations of the Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which is 13.3km from the (crash) site,” the agency said.

Immediately after the crash, Luas activated controls by deploying teams to the location to perform comprehensive checks and early cleanup.

“Sawdust, activated carbon, oil pads and oil booms were placed at the crash site, drains and the subsidiary to prevent the flow of pollutants,” it added.

The management firm of the lorries were also ordered to clean up the area, and Luas continues to monitor cleanup progress in the area.

Luas said the situation is under control, but monitoring will continue to ensure the safety of the water source.
