HULU SELANGOR, Sept 12 — KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) has enhanced public cleaning operations in Hulu Selangor with the introduction of 45 Armroll/roll-on-roll-off (roro) lorries and the unveiling of a refreshed corporate image, coinciding with the commencement of a new public cleaning service contract with the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council (MPHS).
The contract, valued at RM18.7 million per year and effective September 1 this year to August 31, 2032, provides for the extension of services from 34 zones to 45, in line with the district’s growing population and rapid development.
A dedicated lorry will serve each zone for bulk waste collection, facilitating smoother operations and more organised, comprehensive solid waste management.
In addition to bulk waste collection, KDEBWM’s services include grass cutting; sweeping of residential and commercial areas; drain cleaning; garden waste collection; tackling illegal dumping; and cleaning of public markets, night markets, bus stops and litter traps.
MPHS president Julaihah Jamaludin said the implementation of the seven-year contract provides continuity to the collaboration established in 2018, ensuring residents enjoy consistent and improved services.
“Despite the local authority facing rising operating costs, (through) negotiations with KDEBWM (we) have managed to secure a fair and affordable contract value.
“This is crucial, as Hulu Selangor currently produces an average of 5,000 to 6,000 tonnes of waste each month, which is disposed of at the Sungai Sabai and Bukit Tagar landfills, with this volume expected to rise over time,” she told reporters after the launch here today.
Julaihah said it is vital to maintain public cleanliness to protect Hulu Selangor’s reputation as a clean, attractive and competitive tourist destination.
Meanwhile, KDEBWM managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir said the state government-owned company invested nearly RM9 million to buy 45 new lorries, each with a 7.5-tonne capacity with chassis from Japan.
“With these 45 lorries, KDEBWM is able to collect between 180 and 360 tonnes of bulk waste per day, depending on the number of trips, in addition to supporting the increasing public cleaning operations,” he said.
Ramli said that with Euro 4 and Euro 5 technology, the new lorries emit less carbon dioxide than older models, making them more fuel efficient and environment friendly.
“We want to clean without causing pollution, and preserve the air quality and the environment, especially in the Hulu Selangor area, which is rich in natural resources,” he said, adding that KDEBWM operates 1,550 lorries across Selangor.
Meanwhile, he said KDEBWM is prepared for floods and extreme weather during the monsoon transition, with teams on standby 24 hours a day, supported by logistics assets such as lorries, excavators and field workers.
“Managing the major floods in 2021 demonstrated our capabilities, as nearly 48,000 tonnes of waste were cleared at an operating cost of about RM12 million, which was shared with the state government,” Ramli said.
