KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — Selangor’s healthy labour market is third only to Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, said Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) senior lecturer Muhammad Daaniyall Abd Rahman.
The UPM School of Business and Economics educator said the unemployment rate is set to decline to between 1.9 and 2.4 per cent, supported by the 117,000 to 133,000 new jobs next year.
“Selangor’s labour market is among the healthiest. This will bring down the unemployment rate. For the male-female labour division, Selangor has the highest rate of working women in the country, at 73.7 per cent. It is beyond the national benchmark of 60 per cent, which hasn’t been reached. This is as Selangor has a care economy that supports working women,” he said.
Daaniyall was speaking while tabling the Selangor Economic Survey Report 2026 to Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and state administrators at the Sime Darby Convention Centre here today.
The expert revealed that Selangor is experiencing a trade deficit, with only a few sectors logging more exports than imports, and said only integrated electronic circuit commodities performed well with an export rate of RM33.53 million last year compared with its imports worth RM11.25 million.
“Selangor must look into this so it doesn’t become an economic threat. Trade balance (and) deficit must be refined to identify economic sectors that are gross importers,” Daaniyall said.
The inaugural Selangor Economic Survey Report 2026 is being implemented by the state government during the 2026 Selangor State Budget engagement session today. The state budget will be tabled in November.
