KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — Twelve cloud-seeding operations were carried out in Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak between August 30 and October 23 to improve the haze in that period, said the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES).
It added that the operations were conducted by the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), and Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) in the northern, central and southern regions of Peninsular Malaysia and in Sarawak.
“The operations successfully induced rainfall in several targeted areas, helping raise water levels in dams and reduce the impact of transboundary haze,” it said in a written reply published on the Parliament website.
NRES was replying to a question from Datuk Larry Soon (PBM-Julau) on measures taken by the government to address transboundary haze caused by open burning in Indonesia.
It said the government also activated various measures including the National Open Burning Action Plan and National Haze Action Plan to mitigate haze effects, adding that checks with the Plantation and Commodities Ministry have revealed no evidence linking Malaysian plantation companies to fires in Indonesia.
“Nevertheless, the government takes any allegations involving Malaysian-related companies seriously, and any information or evidence presented must be examined in cooperation with the relevant authorities in accordance with applicable laws and jurisdictions,” the ministry said.
