SHAH ALAM, Nov 2 — The Selangor State Education Department (JPNS) has identified schools at high risk of flooding during the northeast monsoon season, to ensure Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams aren’t disrupted, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said proactive preparations must be carried out as effectively as possible for the monsoon, which began October 27.
“We will gather information on this matter. I have requested that JPNS identify locations typically prone to flooding so we can be prepared for this monsoon season,” he told reporters after a symbolic handover ceremony for the Selangor Nutrition (Nutrisel) and Mega Nutrisel programmes at the Integrated Religious Primary School (SRAI) in Section 19 here today.
Meanwhile, Amirudin said Selangor has approved about RM800,000 for quick-win flood mitigation projects near the i-City junction in Section 7 here and Taman Rashna in Klang, set to be done by early December.
“We have prepared water pumps as an alternative to prevent floods in affected areas. As we have now entered the northeast monsoon period, we are, as usual, identifying flood hotspots to ensure we are well-prepared,” he added.
The northeast monsoon is expected to last until March. It is set to bring between three to five episodes of prolonged heavy rain until January and increase flood risks, especially in low-lying and riverside areas.
