SHAH ALAM, Oct 19 – All educational institutions under the Selangor Education Department (JPN) will operate as usual tomorrow, while all outdoor activities have been suspended due to haze.

The decision applies to all educational institutions under its administration. Students attending school are encouraged to wear face masks as precaution against haze.

“Parents or guardians who are concerned about their children's health are permitted to keep them home, provided that they inform the school,” it said in a statement today.

The Selangor JPN added that it is mandatory for school administrators to monitor the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings issued by the Environment Department (DOE) and pay special attention to students who are listed under high-risk health category.

“Parents, guardians and school staff are advised to refer to the Selangor JPN’s official communication channels or their respective schools for accurate and up to date information,” it said.

The department also expressed their appreciation for the cooperation of all parties in safeguarding the health, safety and well being of the education community.

As of 1pm today, the DOE’s Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal reported that Johan Setia in Klang recorded the highest API reading in the country at 172, with 24 areas logging unhealthy air quality reading.

The portal also reported that four monitoring areas in Selangor displayed unhealthy air quality namely; Petaling Jaya with an API of 158, followed by Klang (157), Banting (155), and Shah Alam (153).

An API reading of zero to 50 is good, 51 to 100 is moderate, 101 to 200 is unhealthy, 201 to 300 is very unhealthy, and anything above 300 is hazardous.
