KUCHING, Oct 28 — Police are still awaiting a psychiatric assessment report to determine the mental state of a 16-year-old male student who allegedly attacked a teacher with an axe at a private school here on October 21.
Sarawak Acting Police Commissioner DCP Saifullizan Ishak said police could not draw any conclusions about the suspect's mental state at the time of the incident without the report.
"Police are awaiting the forensic psychiatric assessment report to determine the suspect's mental state at the time of the incident," he told a press conference at the state police headquarters here today.
Saifullizan said police had completed their investigation and submitted the investigation papers to the Sarawak Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office on October 26 for further review.
"Police have recorded statements from 38 witnesses, comprising students, teachers, security guards, medical experts and the suspect's parents, to assist in the investigation.
"Several seized items, including an axe, a knife, firecrackers, as well as computers and gadgets from the suspect's home, have been sent for forensic analysis," he said.
Saifullizan said police had so far found no evidence linking the incident to bullying.
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
In the incident, which occurred at about 7.50 am, the 42-year-old female teacher sustained a wound to her left hand.
She was discharged from hospital after receiving treatment on the same day.
