AMPANG, Oct 27 — The Hulu Langat Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) has approved a RM24 million allocation to upgrade drainage and riverbanks and mitigate floods in Teratai, said area assemblyman Yew Jia Haur.
He said the project will start next year and involves Sungai Kerayong and Sungai Seputeh, though it is still in the assessment stage.
“I have asked Hulu Langat JPS to prioritise flood hotspots and upgrade drains and riverbanks first to reduce flood risks.
“Flood mitigation works need high costs, so their execution must be done in phases according to each area’s needs,” he told a press conference yesterday.
Yew said that since he became Teratai assemblyman in 2023, he has fought for upgrades to infrastructure and especially works on drainage and flood controls in areas from upstream to downstream.
Hulu Langat JPS has spent RM320,000 on upgrading riverbanks behind Taman Muda Ampang Phase 3, he added, after residents complained that collapsed banks were blocking the flow of the river.
“Water from several storm drains merges in the area before being channelled to Sungai Kerayong, so riverbank conditions are important to ensuring drainage systems function well,” he explained.
He also said works there are complete, but the area now faces the problem of overgrown weeds. Yew said he would bring this up to JPS so cleanups can be done to prevent the weeds from affecting water drainage.
