SHAH ALAM, Oct 23 — Yayasan Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation), or MBI, has received a fresh mandate to lead the development of the creative economy, and hopes the sector is given focus in the 2027 Selangor Budget.
Yayasan MBI chief Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor said the allocation would help develop local talent and open more doors in the creative industry, especially in animation, which is seen to have great potential in Selangor.
“We hope there is funding so we may uplift the orange economy with better direction, and ensure Selangor isn’t left behind in terms of the creative economy.
“We have many creative economy sectors in Selangor that we must help, that we must guide, so these talents don’t stay uncovered,” he said.
Azri explained that Selangor has renowned animation companies and smaller firms with potential.
He also referred to the growth of the animation industry witnessed during his visit to Bandung, Indonesia, as a push to empower local talent.
“I think we need to take that momentum with talent in Malaysia so they can grow further.
“One day, who knows, our animations can reach the level of Japan and such. This is what I think we have to look into, because the potential is great in this field,” Azri said.
Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari declared 2027 a springboard year for Selangor’s creative economy, with a focus on ecosystem development including in terms of marketing, animation production, and related expertise.
Under the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2), the state government launched the Selangor Creative Economy Advancement Hubs (SEL-Create Hubs), with an aim of developing four to six hubs by 2028 and growing the entire sector’s value to RM20 billion by 2035.
Amirudin is set to table the 2027 Selangor Budget on November 13.
