KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the media industry should not sideline the role of humans, particularly in editing and reviewing content before publication.

Media Selangor Sdn Bhd's chief executive officer Mohamed Fareed Mohamed Ashaaree said the technology could speed up workflows and increase the production of creative content, but human input remains essential to ensure information is accurate.

“AI can be used to speed up work processes and produce more creative content to attract audiences. However, I stress that the human touch must be retained, particularly when editing content before publication,” he said.

Fareed spoke to the media after delivering a presentation at a forum, titled 'Trust, Authorship and the Future of Creativity in AI-Generated Media', held in conjunction with the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) yesterday.

Addressing the challenge of misinformation, he said media credibility depends on rigorous fact-checking and an organisation’s ability to deliver trustworthy information.

“Trust is crucial in the media industry, particularly as we confront issues such as the spread of misinformation. Therefore, we must work diligently to verify every fact before information is published,” Fareed said.

He also cautioned that technological advances must not undermine the media’s role as a check and balance on the government.

This role must be upheld to ensure the media industry fulfils its responsibilities to society while maintaining public trust in its reporting.

In view of rapid technological development, Fareed also urged the government to introduce stricter laws to regulate AI use.

Earlier, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari officiated the opening of SIBS 2026 at the KLCC.

The event, which began yesterday and runs until Saturday (October 17), features 526 exhibition booths and participants from Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, India, Germany, the United States, and Brazil.

Now in its 10th edition, SIBS 2026 focuses on innovation, resilience, and sustainability.
