KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 – Media Selangor considers artificial intelligence (AI) as an assisting tool that strengthens newsroom operations, rather than posing a threat to the media industry.
Its chief executive officer Mohamed Fareed Mohamed Ashaaree said the growth of AI technology is unavoidable and must be leveraged responsibly, based on specific work requirements.
“At Media Selangor, we take the approach that AI is an assistant; we have to work with AI.
“We do not see AI as a threat, and so on, because sooner or later, it will cover all aspects of our lives,” he said during the ‘Heart & Mind: Leader Edition’ session at the Selangor Pavilion in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2026 yesterday.
Fareed added that the organisation utilises AI in various areas, including news summarisation, visual production, and technical management, depending on the nature of the assignment.
However, human verification remains vital to ensure factual correctness and to minimise inaccuracies in technology-generated content.
He said that Media Selangor is implementing an operational transformation through a convergence model, encouraging journalists to be multi-skilled in areas such as writing, videography, and photography.
Fareed noted that a culture of continuous upskilling and reskilling is being promoted, including a RM100 incentive for reading materials and regular book sharing sessions at departmental meetings.
