HULU LANGAT, Oct 14 — The Industrialised Building System (IBS) expedites the construction of additional classrooms to address overcrowding at schools, said Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek, providing an environment more conducive to learning.
She added that the system, which she called a “game-changer”, allows quicker turnarounds, especially in densely populated areas that need more education facilities.
“Most schools, especially around Hulu Langat here, are old schools and are in increasingly dense areas, so when we see IBS projects being completed way (ahead of schedule), it is a great blessing to the Education Ministry,” she said when met after a handover ceremony here today.
At the ceremony, she symbolically presented 68 additional classrooms under 19 packages, completed using the IBS, to six Hulu Langat schools — SK Ampang Campuran, SMK Jalan Reko, SMK Kajang Utama, SMK Dusun Nanding, SMK Bandar Rinching and SMK Bandar Seri Putra.
She said the completed projects are meaningful to Selangor, which is facing rapid population growth and increasing education needs, coupled with its older schools that need facility upgrades.
Meanwhile, Public Works Department (JKR) Integrated Asset Planning Division senior director Maria Marcus said IBS and modular construction is among government initiatives under the Cakna Madani Quick-Win Programme to strengthen the country’s education infrastructure.
She said JKR has been entrusted with 669 quick-win projects under the 13 Malaysia Plan’s (13MP) first rolling plan.
“It covers 97 modular and IBS school projects, 51 open and roofed multipurpose halls, and 521 additional classrooms for the 2027 session Year 1 intake, involving various states in Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territories,” Maria added.
IBS technology employs the Modular Precast System (MPS), by prefabricating cabins at factories and transporting them to project sites for installation.
