HULU LANGAT, Oct 14 — Thirty-seven out of 191 modular building and Industrialised Building System (IBS) construction projects involving 126 schools in Selangor have been completed so far, with the remainder targeted for completion by the end of the year.

Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) director Shukri Ishak said the projects, with a RM206.6 million allocation, are progressing on schedule, with some completed ahead of the stipulated timeframe.

“I can therefore conclude that Selangor is a state prioritised by the federal government for the implementation of IBS school construction projects, as well as schools for Year One pupils.

“InsyaAllah (God willing), the projects in Selangor are progressing according to schedule, and we expect many more projects to be handed over this December,” he said.

Shukri was speaking to the media after the handover ceremony for completed projects under the Modular Building and IBS Construction Programme at SMK Bandar Seri Putra today.

The ceremony, officiated by Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek, involved the handover of projects at six schools in Hulu Langat, comprising 19 construction packages and 68 classrooms.

He added that the projects also include electrical wiring, fans, whiteboards, noticeboards, and furniture to create a more comfortable learning environment.

“We upgraded the electrical systems and covered walkways connecting the main blocks to the additional classrooms to improve pupils’ safety and comfort.

“For this project at SMK Bandar Seri Putra, each classroom was designed to accommodate 35 pupils or students. We have completed 20 classrooms here today, meaning 700 pupils will benefit from a new learning environment in these new classrooms,” Shukri said.

He emphasised that the project's delivery speed has not compromised safety, with all construction required to comply with contractual guidelines, including fire safety requirements and building design standards.

JKR will monitor the condition of the buildings throughout the defect liability period (DLP) to ensure any damage or shortcomings are identified and rectified.

“For school projects, the DLP is one year for works valued at more than RM500,000. During this period, JKR will conduct regular monitoring. We will visit construction sites and schools to identify defects that need repair.

“We also maintain regular communication with the principals or headteachers of the schools involved to obtain feedback on the buildings or classrooms we have constructed,” Shukri said.

Under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the Works Ministry and Education Ministry are expanding the implementation of the modular building and IBS construction programme at schools nationwide.

The technology uses the Modular Precast System (MPS), or prefabricated cabin-style classrooms, with structures completed at factories before being transported to project sites for installation.
