Haze: Schools in three Selangor districts to remain closed

SHAH ALAM, Oct 11 — Schools under the Hulu Langat, Gombak and Petaling Perdana District Education Offices (PPD) will remain closed tomorrow as haze continues to affect several areas across Selangor.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek said in a Facebook post that the closure would involve all schools under the three PPDs, as well as those in Johor and Bangsar and Pudu, Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, schools in Melaka, Penang, Putrajaya, Labuan, Perak, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Perlis, Sabah and Sarawak will continue as usual.

“Following the haze, schools in Johor and under the Bangsar Pudu, Hulu Langat, Gombak and Petaling Perdana PPDs will be closed on October 12, 2026.

“Schools in other states and districts will operate as usual,” she said in a brief posting on Facebook today.

Fadhlina urged parents and school communities to refer to official announcements by the Education Ministry (MOE), state education departments and their respective PPDs for the latest updates.

Meanwhile, the Selangor State Education Department said affected schools are advised to inform parents or guardians of the matter and take the necessary measures to ensure students’ safety and health remain a priority.

“Education personnel and parents are also advised to follow official announcements from the authorities regarding air quality developments and relevant school operating instructions.

“Further information on school operations and reopening will be communicated through the official channels of the MOE and the Selangor State Education Department,” it said in a statement.

Previously, on October 8, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, expressed concern over students’ safety and health amid the haze affecting the country.

His Majesty advised schools in affected areas be closed if Air Pollutant Index (API) readings remained between 150 and 180 for a prolonged period.

Following this, the MOE ordered all educational institutions in areas recording API readings above 180 to close from October 9.

The same directive also applies to areas recording readings above 150 for three consecutive days, with closures taking effect on October 12.
