SHAH ALAM, Oct 7 — The public must play an active role in maintaining public safety as crime prevention is a shared responsibility, said Selangor deputy police chief Mohd Zaini Abu Hassan.
He added that community involvement is crucial to identifying and addressing security issues early.
“Community safety is not just the responsibility of the police, but rather a joint effort that requires the active involvement of the community,” he said, according to a post on the Polis Selangor Facebook page.
He was speaking at a community policing briefing organised by the Serdang District Police Headquarters at the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) Multipurpose Hall on Jalan Belatuk, Puchong.
Zaini added that effective policing should not be measured only through arrest and solved case rates, but also by public confidence and how safe people feel.
He also said neighbourhood disputes and social conflicts could develop into criminal issues, which makes early intervention important.
“Community awareness in identifying, channeling information and addressing issues at an early stage is very important to prevent a problem from becoming more serious,” he added.
Zaini also called for closer ties between community leaders and police personnel to facilitate information sharing and allow local security issues to be addressed earlier.
He stressed the need for focused monitoring and action against repeat offenders to prevent communities from facing recurring threats.
“Strong and continuous cooperation is believed to not only help prevent crime, but also strengthen public confidence in the police as partners in community safety,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, Zaini said efforts to curb the threat of online scams requires cooperation between all parties including victims, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, and police.
Also present at the briefing today were Selangor Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department chief Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid and Serdang district police chief Muhamad Farid Ahmad.
