ECRL warns cable theft could disrupt testing, delay operations

SHAH ALAM, Oct 1 — Cable theft and cable-cutting incidents along the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) alignment in Selangor could disrupt ongoing testing and commissioning works and potentially affect the project’s targeted commencement of operations in December.

The China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd (CCCECRL) said that the incidents occurred over three consecutive days, from Sunday (September 27) to Tuesday (September 29), as the ECRL underwent testing and commissioning, with trains running day and night at speeds of up to 160kph.

Affected equipment must be inspected, repaired or replaced before testing can resume, while the relevant tests may also have to be repeated.

“Railway systems, equipment and cables along the alignment are also powered or undergoing live testing. Any unauthorised entry or interference with railway infrastructure therefore carries a serious risk of severe injury or electrocution.

“Beyond the immediate safety risks, cable theft and damage to railway infrastructure could disrupt ongoing testing and commissioning works,” it said in the statement today.

The CCCECRL added that continued incidents could impact the project schedule and delay the planned commencement of operations.

It also urged the public to stay away from the ECRL alignment, as it is an active testing area and not open to the public.

Security measures along the ECRL alignment have also been strengthened, with local authorities stepping up surveillance and monitoring in the affected areas to prevent further incidents and safeguard the ongoing testing and commissioning works.

“The public is urged not to enter restricted areas along the ECRL alignment or tamper with any railway infrastructure, cables, or equipment.

“Anyone who notices suspicious people or activities along the alignment should report them immediately to the police or the nearest CCCECRL section office,” the CCCECRL said.
