SHAH ALAM, July 23 — The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project has reached another milestone with the start of construction on the 25-kilometre Section D, completing a strategic connection to the country’s two major ports, Northport and Westports.
The new alignment will directly connect Jalan Kastam station in Port Klang to the two ports, strengthening the national logistics network through a more efficient rail transport system.
China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd (CCCECRL), the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contractor for the ECRL project, marked the start of construction on the critical phase following the government’s approval of the revised project scope in 2025.
The implementation of Section D is also supported by the signing of the Seventh Supplemental Agreement (SA7) for the ECRL EPCC contract, paving the way for the direct connection of the ECRL network to Northport and Westports.
Section D plays a key role in completing the ECRL’s ‘land bridge’ concept, linking ports on the east and west coasts of Peninsular Malaysia.
The alignment will be developed using a dual-track configuration that combines a new standard-gauge line with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad’s (KTMB) existing metre-gauge tracks.
The integration of the two rail systems is expected to optimise cargo services across the ECRL and KTMB networks, while enhancing freight capacity and overall logistics efficiency.
CCCECRL managing director Deng Bo said the main ECRL alignment was nearing completion and had entered the final phase of testing and commissioning.
“Section D marks a new chapter in strengthening rail connectivity in Malaysia. Backed by a proven track record, CCCECRL remains committed to supporting the country’s economic growth and social development through the delivery of world-class rail infrastructure,” he said.
Once completed, Section D will provide seamless rail connectivity between the railway depot area at Kuantan Port, Northport and Westports.
The initiative to shift cargo transportation from roads to rail is also expected to reduce traffic congestion and dependence on heavy vehicles, contributing to more sustainable logistics operations.
The 665km ECRL route from Kota Bharu to Port Klang is scheduled to commence operations in phases.
The Kota Bharu-Gombak section is targeted for completion in December 2026 before commercial operations begin in January 2027, while the Gombak-Port Klang alignment is expected to be completed in December 2027, with full operations commencing in January 2028.
