SHAH ALAM, March 17 — China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd (CCCECRL), the main contractor for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, has completed track laying along the entire 519km Kota Bharu–Gombak alignment ahead of schedule.
The milestone marks the end of the track construction phase, with the project now officially entering the testing and commissioning stage, the company said in a statement today.
As of February, the ECRL project has achieved approximately 92.62 per cent overall progress.
"The final Phase 4 of track laying, covering 126km from Maran, Pahang to Gombak, began in April 2025 and was completed on February 5, half a month ahead of schedule," CCCECRL said.
Managing director Deng Bo said that with electrification underway along the Kota Bharu–Gombak alignment, the project is now progressing towards 8,000km of Fault-Free Run (FFR) testing.
"This milestone brings us one step closer to full operations in January 2027, underscoring our commitment to precision, safety, and delivering a state-of-the-art ECRL project.”
Track laying for the ECRL project officially began in December 2023 at Kuantan Port City (KPC) in Pahang.
Phase 1 covered 92km from KPC to Dungun, Terengganu; Phase 2 spanned 95km from KPC to Maran, Pahang; Phase 3 covered 206km from Dungun to Kota Bharu, Kelantan; while Phase 4 involved the Maran-Gombak stretch.
Previously, in October 2024, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the Selangor government plans to connect the proposed Selangor Rail Line with the ECRL alignment, ensuring better and wider public transport connectivity.
In July last year, Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak said the ECRL stations in Selangor are set to drive local economic growth beyond just serving as transit points.
He said that among them is the Bandar Serendah station, which is set to become a modern gateway to the town and a logistics hub for the region.
