SHAH ALAM, Sept 25 — Yayasan Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation), or MBI, distributed approximately RM58,237 in wakalah zakat to 18 recipients under the gharimin and fisabilillah categories.
The contribution was presented by the foundation's chief Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor during the Wakalah Zakat Contribution handover ceremony at Bangunan Darul Ehsan today.
He said most of the recipients were students in the fisabilillah category pursuing higher education.
“The distribution of this zakat is a gesture by MBI to support and appreciate the efforts of students pursuing their studies at university level,” Azri said.
He added that this is the second year that Yayasan MBI has received 50 per cent of the total zakat paid, compared with one-third previously, for wakalah zakat.
“The trust placed in us by the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) is the result of MBI’s credibility and integrity in its commitment to providing more welfare assistance to the people of Selangor.
“A LZS representative also sits on the Yayasan MBI Zakat Management Committee as an adviser on matters of Islamic law and in screening the eligibility of zakat recipients,” Azri said.
Meanwhile, recipient Ahmad Bariq Yusof, 34, said he is very grateful for Yayasan MBI's assistance in covering the cost of his surgery.
The self-employed worker said the surgery, which was performed three months ago, incurred considerable costs.
“The surgery and follow-up treatment costs that I had to bear myself amounted to almost RM50,000. The assistance provided has, to some extent, eased the financial burden I was experiencing,” he said.
