SHAH ALAM, Sept 23 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) has opened an investigation paper into possible pollution events, after coloured water and greasy discharge were detected in Telok Panglima Garang, Kuala Langat.
LUAS said the findings were made upon investigating two complaints about the state of Sungai Langat, as seen from Jalan Telok Mengkuang and Jalan Perupuk, on Monday.
In a Facebook post yesterday, it said it checked the locations using drones and inspected drains along Jalan Telok Mengkuang, where it found green-coloured water accumulating downstream and flowing into the river.
“A LUAS team found a plastic recycling plant that could be the source of the coloured water, but no such flow was being discharged from the premises,” it said.
It however issued a notice to the plant under the Zero Discharge Policy (ZDP).
Checks by LUAS indicated the coloured water could be originating from the Telok Panglima Garang industrial area.
“Sampling was carried out at the locations concerned for further analysis, and follow-up checks will be conducted in the industrial area to identify the source,” it said.
The LUAS team also investigated the pollution of a drainage system, believed to be due to chemical waste disposal on Jalan Perupuk.
It said coloured water was detected flowing from a metal-plating facility, which had reportedly been sealed by the Environment Department (DOE) and Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL).
“Further checks by the LUAS team at the premises found discharge suspected to be grease residue in drains next to the facility,” LUAS said.
It also collected water samples from the locations to submit to the Chemistry Department for analysis, and opened an investigation paper under Section 79(4) of the LUAS Enactment 1999 for the pollution of water resources.
