SHAH ALAM, Sept 17 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) has renewed its memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to support water resource management and prepare for extreme weather.
The four-year MOU focuses on channelling both parties’ rain telemetry station data into the Integration Water Resource Information Management System (IWRIMS).
According to LUAS, Numerical Weather Prediction (MWP) and radar data, including information from the Radar Integrated Nowcasting System (RaINS) and Malaysia Rainfall Estimation (MyRAE), will also be channelled to LUAS’ Intelligent Support System (LiSS).
“This cooperation allows rain, weather and radar data from both agencies to be used in an integrated manner in monitoring and modelling simulations.
“The data encompasses telemetry station records in the Sungai Selangor, Sungai Langat and Sungai Klang river basins, including LUAS’ rain telemetry stations and MetMalaysia’s meteorology stations,” LUAS said in a statement today.
The agency added that IWRIMS and LiSS will improve operational capacities and support more accurate decisions that are based on current conditions.
It also said it would be able to improve regulatory and management actions related to water resources, including by optimising river and pond use and coordinate dam releases to fulfil raw water needs at downstream intakes.
“This effort also supports the retention of quality and quantities of the state’s water resources at optimum levels, and is important to improve preparations ahead of the El Nino phenomenon.
“With the availability of more comprehensive meteorological and hydrological information, water resource monitoring, planning and management actions can be taken efficiently, responsively, and in an integrated manner to guarantee water supply continuity in Selangor,” said LUAS.
