SHAH ALAM, Sept 19 — The Prisons Department is expected to issue standard operating procedures (SOP) in the near future for the implementation of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s house arrest.
Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said the SOP will detail several matters, including visitation, security and monitoring of the former prime minister’s movements.
“I understand that an SOP will be issued for the purpose of the house arrest,” he said today, according to Astro Awani.
Dusuki said Najib must first pay the RM50 million fine at the Kuala Lumpur High Court Registry before the house arrest process can proceed.
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, yesterday consented to grant Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to him paying the RM50 million fine.
The decision was made at a meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories chaired by His Majesty yesterday.
Najib, 73, has been serving his prison sentence at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, following his conviction for misappropriating funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, while cases related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) are still undergoing trial and appeal proceedings.
On September 11, the media reported that the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories had met to consider, among other matters, Najib’s application for a pardon in connection with his SRC International conviction, but the application was subsequently deferred to a future meeting.
In July 2020, Najib was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million in SRC International funds and fined RM210 million and sentenced to 12 years in prison. The sentence was upheld by the Federal Court in August 2022.
On February 2, 2024, Najib’s prison sentence was halved from 12 years to six years, while his fine was reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.
The Pardons Board for the Federal Territories is chaired by the King and comprises the Attorney-General, the minister responsible for the Federal Territories and three other members appointed by His Majesty.
