SHAH ALAM, Sept 21 – The Prison Department is expected to issue standard operating procedure (SOPs) in the near future on the implementation of house arrest for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Astro AWANI reported that Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said the SOPs will detail several matters, including aspects of visitation, security, and the monitoring of his movements.
“It is understood that SOPs will be issued for the purpose of house arrest,” he said today.
Dusuki also noted that Najib must first settle the RM50 million fine at the Kuala Lumpur High Court Registrar's Office before the house arrest process can proceed.
On Friday (September 18), His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, consented to grant Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to the payment of the RM50 million fine.
The decision was reached during a meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board, chaired by the King.
Najib, 73, has been serving his prison sentence at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, following his conviction for the misappropriation of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds, while the case related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) remains at the trial and appeal stages.
On September 11, media reports indicated that the Federal Territories Pardons Board had met to consider his application for a pardon regarding his SRC International conviction, among others. However, the application was subsequently deferred to a future meeting.
In July 2020, Najib was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million in SRC International funds, fined RM210 million, and sentenced to 12 years in prison. The sentence was upheld by the Federal Court in August 2022.
On February 2, 2024, his prison sentence was reduced by half from 12 years to six years while the fine was reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.
The Federal Territories Pardons Board is chaired by His Majesty and comprises the Attorney-General, the minister responsible for the Federal Territories, and three other members appointed by the sovereign.
