SHAH ALAM, Sept 18 — Young people’s daily mobility challenges were among the topics of a discussion hosted by state executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han yesterday.
The group included youth from various backgrounds including college students, people working in Selangor, and participants from Negeri Sembilan and Sarawak.
“They spoke based on their own experiences about daily challenges with mobility, from first- and last-mile connectivity, incomplete transport links, to less-than-satisfactory pedestrian paths and wider urban planning,” Ng said in a Facebook post today.
He added that listening to these users’ experiences gave room for discussion on Selangor’s ongoing efforts, including the Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT) service, footpath upgrades, and public transport planning, and that these components must be viewed from a wider perspective so the mobility system better serves users.
He also shared with the group about his recent walking audits in several locations statewide, which he pursued to understand pedestrians’ concerns.
“By walking these paths myself and directly seeing these conditions, we have a real idea of issues faced by pedestrians every day, and things that can be fixed so journeys become safer, more comfortable, and more well linked,” he added, saying this approach is in line with Selangor’s aim towards more pedestrian-friendly urban planning.
On September 7, Ng met with the Selangor branch of the Town and Country Planning Department (PLANMalaysia) to discuss pedestrian-friendly guidelines, which cover safety, connectivity, and access.
During the meeting, he emphasised the need to link pedestrian paths with public transport for a more inclusive mobility system.
Meanwhile, he said the youth group’s willingness to share their experiences and ideas on mobility is encouraging, as these views give the government a clearer understanding of real-world situations.
“May mobility in Selangor keep improving and more cities have better mobility and are more liveable for all,” Ng added.
